Remember for each script, it helps to have the overall conversation to be heading in that direction. E.g. for bringing up student debt in the second section below, maybe you’re talking about university, or it’s payday and you’re feeling frustrated at the student finance repayment on your payslip. Any script will feel off if it’s brought up without context, so think of ways to build this up beforehand.

When to use it: Early dating stage when you want to get a sense of someone’s money mindset

Contextual cues to build up:

• people winning crazy prizes
• finding money in surprising locations
• guilty pleasures

Touching on debt

When to use it: You’re becoming serious and want to talk financial transparency, you’re exclusive

Contextual cues to build up:

• You see or scroll past a “millennial debt confession” video or tweet (could do this on purpose)
• You’re talking about university, moving, or past financial struggles
• You’re both talking about adulting, growing older, someone’s birthday/wedding/baby coming up reminds you of getting older
